Textbook Reservation Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)



UMD students and parents have many questions about textbook reservations at UMD. We hope this list will help answer those questions. If you have additional questions you can contact the UMD Book Store by emailing book@d.umn.edu or by calling (218) 726-8708.

Why am I being charged for new textbooks when I selected used?

Not all courses have used books available. Textbook reservation orders are processed 1-2 weeks before the beginning of the semester, in the order in which they are received.  We cannot guarantee that we will have used textbooks available when we process your order. The price shown is the maximum amount you would pay. You will not be charged until we process your order.

Will I be refunded the difference in price if I receive used textbooks instead of new?

You will not be charged for any textbooks until we process your order. If there are used textbooks available when your order is processed, then you will only be charged for used.

When will my credit card be charged for my books?

Your credit card will be charged when your order is actually filled.

Can I use my U-Card to pay for my books?

You may use your UCard to pay for textbook reservations to be picked up at UMD. Textbook reservations are available for fall and spring semesters. UCards can NOT be used as payment for textbook orders being shipped.

Why won't my email address work?

You need to create a profile on the umdstores.com website to reserve textbooks or shop for merchandise. Registration for our website is separate from your UMD email account.

How can I access my order once it's been placed?

You can check on your order status online.  Simply log in with your UMD Stores website user name and password, and choose the "track orders" option. Please note that textbook reservation orders are not filled and packed 1-2 weeks before classes start, so you will not see changes to your order until then. Please call us at (218) 726-8708 for additional assistance.

When can I pick up my textbooks?

Reserved textbooks can be picked up at UMD EXPRESS. Reservation pickup dates and times for the current semester is available on the textbook home page. Click here to return to the textbook homepage.

I received my order, but one of my books did not ship. Will you send it later?

We pack all available textbooks at the time we ship. Occasionally, a book has not been received or is unavailable until the semester starts. You can make another reservation for pickup, or stop in to UMD Stores to purchase the book.

One of my courses shows "auto-bill" or "direct-bill" for the materials. What is that?

Some courses now provide digital materials directly to the students on the first day of class. If you have one of these classes, your instructor will notify you and will provide you with the access information. The access fee for these materials will be charged directly to your student tuition account, not your credit card.
