Computers at UMD

Let this be your guide for any general computer questions you may have at UMD...
What kind of computer do I need at UMD?

Access to a computer has become a necessity at college. If you don't have a computer, you can buy access to UMD's computer labs, but having your own computer can make things much easier for you.

Unfortunately, computer speeds and specifications change quickly, so a computer that is a few years old might not be the best choice. Newer computers should work out fine, but make sure that you have an ethernet (network) card!

UMD's Information Technology Department (ITSS) has some recommendations for your computer's specifications.  They can also recommend some operating systems for you.

Where should I buy a computer?

The Computer Corner is the campus computer store at UMD. We are located in the lower level of UMD Stores in the Kirby Student Center.
What computer brand names are available at the Computer Corner?

The Computer Corner currently sells Dell®, HP®, and Equus APCs. We also offer Macintosh® systems.
What software do you carry?

We carry all the popular brands of software at the Computer Corner, including Microsoft®, Corel®, Macromedia®, Symantec™, and more, all at educational (LOW!) prices.

Please check the Computer Corner homepage to see links to some of the software we have available.

Keep in mind that we can special order almost any software, often for the same or lower prices than mail-order or online catalogs. New software keeps showing up, so drop by, take a look and definitely ask questions!

Who or what is the Information Technology department?

Information Technology Systems & Services (ITSS) makes the computers run on campus.  Among many things, ITSS are the people that run the campus internet (network, ethernet, servers and modems), manage all the student and staff internet and email accounts, fix broken computers, run the campus computer labs, offer advice, solve problems, offer workshops, administer A/V equipment AND run the campus telephones!

The Computer Corner and ITSS work together throughout the year to get UMD software and ethernet cards into the hands of staff and students.

Where can I get my computer fixed?

ITSS Maintenance--the computer fix-it folks on campus--will currently work on MPC®, Equus and Macintosh® computers. If you have one of these three brands, you can bring your computer to the Computer Corner and we will take it to Maintenance for a look. Maintenance will assess the problem, give you an estimate, and fix the computer if possible (remember, computers don't live forever...). When your repair is done, you can pick it up and pay for it at the Computer Corner. If you have an on-campus staff computer, contact ITSS Maintenance directly at 7973.

If you have another brand of computer that needs repair, you can still try ITSS Maintenance.  If they can't help, plesae contact your computer's manufacturer for repair outlets. ComputerWorld on London Road in Duluth services many kinds of computers, or you can check the Yellow Pages under "Computers".

How do I connect to the internet?

ITSS has great web pages that can explain how to connect to the internet at UMD.  We suggest these:     The Computer Corner and ITSS work together to help staff and students connected to the internet.  The Computer Corner sells the UMD Internet Kit CD-ROM for ITSS, as well as ethernet cards for the dorms and modems for off-campus dwellers to help you get connected. Please click on these links if you have specific questions about modems, ethernet or wireless, or scroll down for further information on these topics.

What modem do I need?

The new 56K modem standard, called v.90, has been available for a while, and all modem manufacturers have adopted this standard.

For the best information, visit www.56k.com.

What's the deal with ethernet cards?

Click here for a list of the ethernet cards the Computer Corner stocks.

For more details, please read the RESNET page from ITSS.

Where can I get wireless internet access?

Most areas of UMD's campus have wireless access, but generally not the dorms and some apartments.

Please check out this link to see where the wireless areas are.

The Computer Corner keeps some wireless cards in stock, or we can special order one for you. You can also order your laptop pre-configured with wireless built in. Currently, the two major specifications for wireless are 802.11b (11-speed) and 802.11g (54 speed). Apple® calls these "Airport" cards. All versions will work at UMD. For more details, please read the Wireless page from ITSS.

Where are the computer labs, and how do I get access?

ITSS runs a variety of computer labs here at UMD. For the best information, including hours and locations, please visit the ITSS Computer Labs page. This page also details basic access vs. full lab access. All current students have basic access (email, web labs/Sunrays) included in your tuition.
