UMD Stores Return Policy


General Merchandise Return Policy:

General merchandise in original condition such as apparel, gift items, trade books and supplies may be exchanged or refunded to the original form of tender within 30 days only a valid UMD Stores receipt.

  • Holiday Return Policy: general merchandise items purchased October 25 thru December 31 can be returned until January 31st.
  • After 30 days, with receipt: items may be exchanged or a gift card issued.
  • Defective apparel and/or gift items with a receipt can be exchanged or refunded within 30 days.
  • Defective apparel and/or gift items without a receipt can be refunded within 30 days at the lowest sale price to a gift card.
  • No receipt: no exchanges or returns. Any exceptions must be made with discretion from appropriate Buyer, or CSS if Buyer is unavailable.

Not returnable

  • Items not in original condition are NOT returnable.
  • Worn or washed apparel is NOT returnable.
  • Items smelling like smoke or pet smells or covered in pet fur are NOT returnable.

Online Orders

Returns & Exchanges via Mail

We accept returns and exchanges via mail for general merchandise purchased online.

  • If you choose to return or exchange an item via mail you are responsible for the associated shipping costs.
  • A copy of the receipt is required for all returns or exchanges.
  • Merchandise may be returned within 30 days of delivery (based on tracking information) as long as it meets the conditions of our return policy.
  • Shipping fees are not refundable.
  • Please note that exchanges are subject to availability.
  • Returned items will be credited to the same credit card used for the original purchase.
  • For exchanges: you will be charged any difference in costs plus our standard shipping fee when it is sent to you. These charges will be applied to the credit card used for the original purchase. In some cases, you will be contacted by customer service to complete the charge over the phone. Items will not ship until they have been paid for.

Please include a copy of the receipt in the package, along with a note indicating which item(s) you wish to return and/or exchange.

Incorrect/Damaged/Defective Merchandise

If you receive a product in error or the item is damaged or defective upon delivery, please contact the store as soon as possible. We will issue you a UPS call tag to return the incorrect/damaged item at no cost. We will ship you the correct item or a replacement at no charge for shipping.

Course Materials (textbooks and art kits) Return Policy:

    Spring Semester 2021

    • Spring semester (purchased or rented) books may be returned with receipt and ID by Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021.
    • NEW BOOKS MUST BE UNMARKED. Marked books and opened CDs, etc., may be refunded as used. Access codes opened, activated or scratched off are non-returnable.
    • NEW RENTAL BOOKS, returned through Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, will be refunded at a reduced rate if marked or highlighted.
    • Textbook returns (purchased or rented) from Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021 through Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, must have proof of cancellation receipt and ID.
    • The LAST day to purchase Spring Semester books is Friday, Feb. 12, 2021. The last day to rent Spring Semester books is Friday, March 19, 2021.
    • All Spring Semester RENTAL books are DUE by Friday, May 7, 2021.
    • Art kits may be returned with receipt + ID by Tuesday Jan 26, 2021. All items in the kit must be included and must be UNUSED and in new condition.
    • Art kits returned on or after Wednesday, Jan. 27th - Friday, Feb. 12th, 2021 must have proof of cancellation, receipt + ID.

    May & Summer Session 2021:

    • Books may only be returned for the current term. Receipt and ID required.
    • New books must be in unmarked and new condition
    • Returns MUST be accompanied by name and student ID#
    • The last day to RENT is July 9, 2021
    • Last day for returns and rental refunds, including for dropped courses, during May and Summer sessions:
      • Courses 4 weeks or less: must be returned or postmarked by the end of the third day of class
      • Courses 5 weeks or longer: must be returned or postmarked by the end of the fifth day of class
    • The last day to return rentals is July 30, 2021

Hardware Return Policy

Returns will be granted under the manufacturer and/or distributor returns policy with original receipt.

  • All packaging, instructions and accessories must be included.
  • The returned item is in original condition (no marks, scratches, residue, etc.).
  • A 15% restocking fee may be applicable.
  • All Apple products that are either an IUFU (Inoperable Upon First Use) or defective shall be referred to the Information Technologies Systems and Service Department at UMD for Authorized Apple Service.

Software Return Policy

Return of unopened software will be accepted within 15 days of date of purchase with original receipt.

  • Defective titles will be exchanged for the same title, media and platform.
  • Software must be current version.

Electronics Return Policy

Returns will be accepted within 15 days of date of purchase with original receipt.

  • All packaging, instructions and accessories must be included.
  • The returned item is in original condition (no marks, scratches, residue, etc.).
  • A 15% restocking fee may be applicable.
  • If item is defective, it may be exchanged without packaging as long as it is within 15 days of purchase and a receipt is presented. Defective item is subject to testing by an employee before the exchange occurs.
  • Dr. Dre products are returnable to the manufacturer only.
  • Skull Candy products can be returned to UMD Stores within 15 days. Thereafter, guaranteed for life by manufacturer.
  • Calculators are not returnable when purchased during finals week.

Ink Cartridges Return Policy

  • Ink will not be returnable for refund once it has been opened.
  • Defective items will be accepted for exchange within 15 days of purchase.
